Rutherford County's county seat was established in 1811 by the Tennessee State Legislature. The town was originally called "Cannonsburgh" after Tennessee statesman Newton Cannon, but it was renamed "Murfreesboro" in honor of Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree. His great granddaughter was the famous author Mary Noailles Murfree.
